The judges seminar was held on the 8th, and the judges reminded of the common understanding of the scoring system that was reached at the judges clinic in Rome in March. Each judge received an overview of the judging teams, such that each they would be judging. This years’ participation was very even—15-19 pairs in each kata. A pool system was used, 2 pools for each kata , with the 1 st and 2nd place winners from last year in each kata placed as the last pair in each their pool. Some countries had up to 3 pairs entered in same kata. These teams were then randomized between the pools. Results of the drawing were available in printed form shortly Transport from the hotel to the sports complex was well-organized. The sports complex was the center of much activity—dance and children’s activities in addition to judo. A triple mat area with safety zones and plenty of room to walk around the competition area, as well as a warm-up area for the competitors was ready the day before the competition. This year Finland had one team in the Kime-nokata, Sweden had one team in the Goshin Jutsu, and Norway had a Nage-no-kata team. Hopefully all countries will improve their participation 100% next year. Sweden was further represented by 2 judges, Finland by 2 judges, and Norway by one judge. The competition itself was well-organized with good help from several competent and clever people. Daniel Lascau did a superb job as master of ceremonies. A number of awards were presented, but one was of special interest for the Nordic countries: Peter Martin, 7. dan received a special award for his personal contribution in helping to get kata training up and going in Romania. It is especially interesting that some of the competitors who of the European Kata Chamhionship. It was very thoughtful for the organizers to also award small plaques to each of the kata judges . The level of the competitors has increased greatly since the start of the European Kata Championship. All competitors now appear on the mat correctly attired, with a belt without a cross in back, of neat appearance, correctly carrying out the bows and in general, with a very good knowledge of their kata. It is much harder now to place in the upper half of the competitors than it was a few years ago. Daily training with good coaching was the recipe the A very well organized championship—all honor to the Romanian Judo Federation for this event!
